Wyndham Championship: FedEx Cup Playoffs Race Heats Up After Suspended Round 2
The Wyndham Championship is delivering peak drama as the final stop before the FedEx Cup Playoffs. With only the Top 70 advancing, players are giving everything to keep their seasons alive. Every shot at Sedgefield Country Club matters. And with Round 2 suspended due to lightning, pressure builds heading into a weather-affected weekend.
Lightning Halts Round 2, Weather Could Shake Things Up
Round 2 was suspended Friday afternoon due to lightning. Play is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. ET Saturday. Forecasts suggest hot, humid conditions with scattered storms in the afternoon, making early tee times more favorable.
The Leaders: Cameron Young and Aaron Rai
Cameron Young and defending champion Aaron Rai sit at the top, though neither has completed Round 2. Young fired an opening 63 with eight birdies and followed it up with a blistering start in Round 2 — seven birdies already and a six-footer for another on 16 when play stopped. He’s 10-under for the front nine across two rounds.
Aaron Rai matched Young’s 63 in Round 1. In Round 2, he’s bogey-free and 6-under through 13 holes. The Englishman is looking to go back-to-back at the Wyndham, a feat that would solidify his standing ahead of the playoffs.
Morning Movers: Meissner and Im Post 12-Under
Mac Meissner and Sungjae Im took advantage of the morning wave. Im carded two steady rounds of 64, while Meissner followed a 65 with a scorching 63. Both players sit at 12-under. Mark Hubbard is one back at 11-under. Nico Echavarria and Alex Noren are at 10-under but still have holes to play in Round 2.
Whydham Championship FedEx Cup Updates
The pressure is high. Davis Thompson, who started the week 78th in the FedEx Cup standings, is projected to move up to 70th — right on the bubble. Gary Woodland helped his cause with a rare albatross on Hole 5. He began at 75th and is now projected 67th.
Chris Kirk has also jumped from 73rd to 66th, playing himself into potential playoff contention.
Falling Back: Players Moving the Wrong Way
It’s not good news for everyone. Byeong Hun An started the week at 69th but is projected to drop to 75th. Matti Schmid fell from 70th to 73rd. Cam Davis lost four spots and is now outside looking in at 71st. Emiliano Grillo, who started 66th, now sits on the edge at 69th.
Making the cut is non-negotiable. Those who play the weekend have a real shot to surge.
Top 125 Battle: Card on the Line
The Wyndham isn’t just about the Top 70. For others, it’s about staying in the Top 125 to retain playing privileges.
- Alex Noren is making a big move, jumping from 141st to 121st.
- Chandler Phillips moved 11 spots from 127 to 116.
- Ricky Castillo surged from 122 to 109 — a strong position heading into the weekend.
But not all veterans are safe. Matt Kuchar dropped three spots to 129. Brandt Snedeker followed suit and now sits at 128. Zach Johnson also lost five spots, falling to 125 — dangerously close to the cut line.
Rest and Recovery Key Before Long Saturday
The weekend at the Wyndham Championship promises more twists. With weather delays, playoff dreams on the line, and a stacked leaderboard, fans can expect fireworks. From Aaron Rai’s title defense to Cameron Young’s red-hot putter, everything is in play. Stay tuned — this FedEx Cup battle is far from over.
