US Open Scores: Spaun Leads After Day 1 at Brutal Oakmont

Leader J.J. Spaun on the right, with Brooks Koepka in the center and Jon Rahm on the left, during the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont, all in pursuit of the lead.

Day 1 at Oakmont delivered exactly what we expected — chaos, challenge, and a course that punished mistakes. Only 10 players finished under par, showing just how tough the conditions were. As the scores show, the US Open is living up to its name.

Top of the Leaderboard

J.J. Spaun leads after an incredible bogey-free round of 66 (-4). It’s the first bogey-free round at Oakmont since Dustin Johnson in 2016. Spaun started on the front nine and made nine straight pars. After the turn, he caught fire. He birdied holes 10, 12, 16, and 17. His finish was calm — a safe two-putt on 18. It was a brilliant round in the morning when conditions were easier.

Others in the Mix

Thriston Lawrence shot 67 (-3). He made six birdies, one bogey, and one double.
Brooks Koepka is tied for third at 68 (-2). He eagled the 4th hole with a 42-foot putt, dropped shots on the back nine, but bounced back with birdies on his last two holes.

Sungjae Im also finished at -2. He had five birdies but three bogeys, all in the last seven holes. Si Woo Kim joins them at 68 after a solid round.

Four players are tied at -1 (69):

  • Jon Rahm, who made birdie and eagle on holes 3 and 4
  • Ben Griffin, who’s won twice already this year
  • Thomas Detry and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, two talented Europeans

Even Par, Still in the Hunt

At even par (70), five big names sit tied for 11th:
Adam Scott, Russell Henley, Jordan Spieth, Cameron Young, and Collin Morikawa. They’re close enough to strike if Oakmont stays tough.

Notable Struggles

Several stars struggled in Round 1.

Scottie Scheffler shot 73 (+3). He missed the fairway left on holes 3, 4, and 9. He also three-putted hole 13. Despite three birdies, he had six bogeys. He’s tied for 49th but could bounce back on Friday.

Rory McIlroy posted 74 (+4). Surprisingly, his driving was good. He birdied holes 11 and 12 early on. But he three-putted holes 1 and 7. On hole 4, a bad drive into the rough cost him another bogey.

Others at +3 include Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton, and Gary Woodland.

At +4, alongside Rory, are:
Tommy Fleetwood, Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Fitzpatrick, Wyndham Clark, Lucas Glover, Cam Davis, and Phil Mickelson.

Shot of the Day

Patrick Reed made a rare double eagle (albatross) on the par-5 4th hole. He holed it from 286 yards out. The ball landed perfectly, slowed on the upslope, and rolled into the center of the cup.

Sadly, he ended poorly. On the 18th hole, he made a triple bogey after finding the rough off the tee. He finished with a 73 (+3).

Quotes from the Field

(Source: USOpen.com)

“It’s such a blur when you’re playing. But I hear a lot of like, ‘Go J.J.’ chants and stuff like that. It’s really cool to see the magnitude of this championship and at such a historic venue, and to see the beautiful clubhouse in the background. But you’re just trying to stay in the moment. You want to say, like, thank you to everyone that’s telling you, good playing, but you end up saying it 50 times in one hole.” – J.J. Spaun

“I feel good. It’s nice to put a good round together. It’s been a while. I’ve been working hard, just got into some bad habits and bad swing positions. We worked pretty hard last week, [instructors] Pete Cowen and Jeff Pierce were on me pretty good, and Pete got into me again on Monday, in the bunker for about 45 minutes. I just sat there, and he scolded me pretty well.” – Brooks Koepka

“Yeah, I watched [the early morning coverage]. I think it helps. It’s not exactly the same conditions, and in the afternoon, it dried up a little bit. Some of those holes were playing a little shorter. Some of those bounces were maybe slightly firmer. But it always helps to see. When you see someone like J.J. [Spaun] go out and shoot 4 under, you say, well, it’s doable. It’s hard, but it’s doable.” – Jon Rahm

🏁 Final Notes on US Open Scores

The first round at Oakmont lived up to the hype — tough, dramatic, and unforgettable. With US Open scores showing just 10 players under par, the championship is wide open heading into Day 2. Expect more movement, pressure, and brilliance as the battle for the title continues.
