PXG Upgrades Secret Weapon Mini Driver with Thinner Face and Precision Weighting
PXG introduced the next-generation Secret Weapon Mini Driver on October 22, 2026, updating its compact clubhead with a 4.4-percent thinner face and refined perimeter weighting to increase ball speeds and stability. Designed to bridge the performance gap between a traditional driver and a 3-wood, the new model targets golfers seeking maximum distance off the tee without sacrificing the accuracy required for tight fairways.
How the PXG Secret Weapon 2 increases ball speed and MOI
The core engineering update in the 2027 Secret Weapon focuses on maximizing energy transfer at impact while maintaining structural integrity. PXG engineers reduced the face thickness by 4.4 percent compared to the previous generation, pushing the characteristic time (CT) directly to the legal USGA speed limit. This increased deflection allows the face to flex and snap back more efficiently, generating faster ball speeds across a wider area of the clubface rather than just the center.
To prevent the thinner face from becoming fragile, the design team utilized advanced finite element analysis (FEA) to rework the internal sole architecture. This reinforcement distributes impact stress throughout the head, allowing the saved mass to be repositioned. Additionally, a lightweight carbon fiber crown frees up further weight to sit low and deep in the profile.
Caleb Kroloff, PXG’s director of woods research and development, explained the synergy of these updates: The thinner face and refined sole structure work together. We reinforced the areas that needed support and moved saved weight to the perimeter. That helps us deliver more speed with more consistent performance when golfers miss the center of the face. By moving this mass to the perimeter, the clubhead achieves a higher moment of inertia (MOI), which reduces twisting on mishits and preserves ball speed on strikes away from the sweet spot.
What Precision Weighting Technology means for shot shaping
Beyond the fixed internal architecture, the new Secret Weapon offers extensive adjustability through PXG’s Precision Weighting Technology. The sole features four distinct weighting ports located at the heel, toe, front, and back. The club ships with two 7.5-gram weights and two 2.5-gram weights, providing a 5-gram differential for precise tuning.
GolfWRX reported that this adjustable mass system allows players to manipulate both shot shape and launch conditions. Placing the heavier weights in the heel promotes a draw bias, while moving them to the toe encourages a fade. Shifting mass forward lowers the launch angle and reduces spin, whereas placing the heavy weights in the back increases forgiveness, launch, and spin.
Because the club features a shorter shaft length than a standard driver, moving these grams also alters the overall swing weight, allowing players to dial in their preferred feel. Combined with the adjustable hosel system, golfers have two independent levers to fine-tune their trajectory and dispersion patterns.
Why tour players demanded the original Secret Weapon shape
While the internal technology received a significant overhaul, PXG deliberately left the external profile untouched based on direct feedback from their tour staff. Before initiating the design process, Kroloff consulted with professionals who were actively gaming the original model.
MyGolfSpy noted that the tour consensus was strictly to preserve the existing geometry. Kroloff recalled the players telling him: Do not change the shape. Don’t mess with it. It is so easy to hit off a tee. It is just as easy in our minds to hit off the deck as it is a fairway wood. The turf interaction’s perfect.
This retention of the 300cc footprint aligns with a broader industry trend. Golf Monthly highlighted that the mini driver category has seen a steady resurgence on professional tours, with players like Tommy Fleetwood utilizing the club to navigate tight driving holes. The confidence of tour professionals in the updated model is evident, with PGA Tour pro Jake Knapp immediately putting the new club into play.
"The original Secret Weapon was my favorite club in the bag, so I had high expectations for this one," Knapp said in the official release. "I absolutely love it. It has everything I liked about the original, with more speed and forgiveness. Putting it in the bag was an easy decision."
Who should consider adding a PXG mini driver to their bag
For amateur golfers, the primary question surrounding any mini driver is whether it serves as a viable replacement for a standard driver or a 3-wood. Based on the design parameters, the 2027 Secret Weapon is best utilized as a specialized tool rather than an everyday driver replacement for the average player.
The club is built for golfers who struggle with the dispersion of a 460cc driver but require more distance than a traditional 3-wood can provide. At 13 degrees of loft and 43.25 inches in length, it offers a shorter, more controllable shaft that promotes center-face contact. It is particularly effective off the deck on long par 5s or tight par 4s where turf interaction is critical, as the compact head glides through the grass more easily than a deep-faced fairway wood.
The new Secret Weapon is available in both right- and left-handed models. Golfers interested in optimizing the weighting system and hosel settings for their specific swing characteristics should utilize a professional fitting to ensure the club matches their launch requirements and shot-shape tendencies.
