Min Woo Lee Takes Early Lead at Rocket Classic Round 1

Min Woo Lee, Rocket Classic Round 1 leader

The week’s PGA Tour tournament blasted off Thursday at Detroit Golf Club. Min Woo Lee wasted no time making noise. He posted a blazing 8-under 64, grabbing the solo lead after Rocket Classic Round 1. It is already shaping up to be a shootout.

Leaderboard: Lee Leads, But Crowd Is Close

Min Woo Lee was sharp all day. He made eight birdies, no bogeys, and led the field in strokes gained putting. His approach play was solid, and he kept the ball in great spots. As one of our top picks in the Rocket Classic preview, Lee lived up to the hype with a near-flawless opening round.

Just behind him, two players sit at -7:

  • Adam Svensson made seven birdies and avoided mistakes. His irons were tight, and he rolled in several mid-range putts.
  • Nick Hardy went on a tear with six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 14th. A lone bogey on hole 2 was his only slip.

Patrick Cantlay and Cameron Young, both featured in our Rocket Classic preview picks, are tied at -6. Cantlay carded six birdies with no bogeys and looked in full control from tee to green. Young added fireworks with an eagle on the par-5 7th, four birdies, and just one bogey to stay well in the hunt.

Keegan Bradley, riding on momentum from his win last week, sits at -4 after a steady opening round. The U.S. Ryder Cup captain dropped a shot early but bounced back with five birdies, finishing strong on the back nine.

Collin Morikawa ended at -3, making four birdies and one bogey. He looked solid but couldn’t get the putter hot. Cam Davis, the defending champ, made three birdies, one bogey, and posted -2.

Some Big Names Struggle to Find Form in Rocket Classic Round 1

  • Hideki Matsuyama made four bogeys and only one birdie, finishing at +3.
  • Thriston Lawrence had a tough day with five bogeys and a lone birdie, closing at +4.
They’ll need something special Friday to stick around.

Scoring Conditions: Red Numbers Everywhere

Thursday brought calm wind and clear skies. Temperatures sat in the high 80s, and the greens were soft. Scoring was ideal.

  • Current Cut Line: -2
  • Expected Cut Line: Could move to -3 or -4, based on how many players stay under par

Over 70 players are already at -2 or better. The pressure is on heading into Round 2.

Players on the Bubble

A few big names need to rally:

  • Tony Finau: -1 – Needs to go lower Friday
  • Rickie Fowler: E – Missed birdie chances cost him
  • Alex Noren: E – Quiet round, no momentum

All three are just outside the cut and must push in Round 2.

Friday at the Rocket Classic: It’s Moving Day Already

Friday brings more warm weather, more birdies, and more pressure. The leaderboard is packed. The cut line is rising. Players can’t afford to coast.

Can Min Woo Lee stay out front? Will someone at -7 or -6 catch fire? And which stars will survive the cut?

The Rocket Classic Round 1 was great but Round 2 is looking like the same if not better. So stay tuned to PGA Tour updates as we expect to have another thriller unfolding in Detroit.
